Barrister Gohar Says Nawaz Sharif Irrelevant in Politics

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announced that the opposition will walk out and protest the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Speaking to the media, he said PTI will deliver speeches against the amendment and refuse to support it. Barrister Gohar criticized former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, claiming he has lost political relevance in the country. He insisted that whether Sharif attends the National Assembly session or not, it will not change the political scenario.
Gohar said Nawaz Sharif expected a red-carpet welcome in Parliament but received none. He remarked that Sharif misjudged his influence among lawmakers. The PTI chairman emphasized that opposition parties are united in rejecting the amendment and will demonstrate their stance through a public protest. He reaffirmed that the amendment contradicts PTI’s principles and the party will oppose it actively.
Meanwhile, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to attend today’s National Assembly session to vote for the amendment. Sources confirmed that the three-time former prime minister will cast his vote in favor of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Following the session, he will visit the Prime Minister’s House and later offer condolences to his friend Irfan Siddiqui’s bereaved family. Sharif’s participation signals the ruling coalition’s strong support for the amendment.
The Senate had already passed the amendment with a two-thirds majority, while opposition parties boycotted the proceedings. A total of 64 senators voted in favor, with none opposing the bill. The amendment requires a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament to become law. The ruling coalition’s clear majority in the National Assembly ensures the amendment’s smooth passage today.
According to official data, the National Assembly’s 336 members need 224 votes to meet the two-thirds requirement. The ruling coalition secured 237 supporting members ahead of the vote. With the opposition boycotting, the amendment is expected to pass easily. The vote marks a key political moment, highlighting divisions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties.
